Lagos Announces Strategic Road Closures for Fanti Carnival

The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic management plan, including the temporary closure of key roads, ahead of the highly anticipated Fanti Carnival scheduled to hold on Monday, April 6, 2026.

The disclosure was made by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, as part of preparations to ensure a safe, orderly, and culturally vibrant outing for residents and visitors expected to throng the historic event.

According to the government, the affected routes, largely within the Island axis, will be cordoned off from 7:00 a.m. on the day of the carnival. The roads slated for closure include King George V Road at the junction by Mobil Filling Station, Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS, Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital.

To mitigate the impact of the closures on vehicular movement, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has mapped out alternative routes for motorists. Vehicles approaching from Obalende towards Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while traffic from Bonny Camp heading towards McEwen Bridge, as well as commuters descending from Flagstaff House towards TBS, will be diverted through Obalende Bridge.

Similarly, motorists coming from Outer Marina en route to TBS will be channelled towards Obalende Bridge, ensuring a steady flow of traffic around the affected corridors.

The government urged residents and road users to plan their journeys ahead of time and cooperate with traffic officials deployed across strategic locations to manage movement during the period.

While expressing regret over any inconvenience the temporary measures may cause, authorities emphasised that the traffic arrangements are necessary to guarantee public safety and the seamless hosting of the Fanti Carnival, a culturally significant event that celebrates Lagos’ rich Afro-Brazilian heritage.

Residents and visitors are therefore encouraged to embrace the spirit of the festival while adhering strictly to traffic advisories.
