Lagos State Safety Commission Hosts Construction Safety Training*

The Lagos State Safety Commission on Tuesday organized a one-day construction safety training program at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry Conference & Exhibition Centre. 

The event aimed to equip participants with the knowledge of safety requirements for construction in Lagos State and identify the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders.

Mr. Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, was represented by Mr. Seun Awojobi, Technical Adviser of the Agency. According to Mr. Awojobi, the training was part of the commission's efforts to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities in the built industry. "Accidents don't just happen, they are caused," he emphasized, highlighting the need for adequate safety measures.

The training covered topics such as First Aid and CPR, Working Safely at Heights, and Good Housekeeping. Participants were expected to develop safety management systems for their organizations' construction projects.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has intensified safety advocacy and enforcement of safe practices on construction sites. The commission is also working to implement compulsory insurance laws to protect employees, employers, and the general public from unforeseen risks.

Mr. Awojobi urged stakeholders to support the Lagos State Government's efforts in making the built environment safe and incident-free. The event marked a significant step towards promoting safety awareness and preventing accidents in the construction industry.

One of the facilitators,  Retired Director, Public Safety and Well-being, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Adeyinka Adebiyi, spoke extensively on safety infraction and code of conduct in construction companies and wellness  said in spite of safety and health training received, workers sometimes forget to apply the right methodology and procedures in discharge of their jobs. 

He said, according to "Alberto, 2011, only the living can work and earn wages", Adebiyi said.

The 2nd speakers, Engr. Odunayo Olukotun and Engr. Toro Adeyanju from Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, spoke on Application of First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR) across the built environment.
