Oborevwori’s Commendation Sparks National Attention on Benin City Boys Empowerment Scheme

What began as a routine political empowerment outreach in Edo State has rapidly evolved into a subject of national political discourse following public commendation from Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, over the organisation and coordination of the Benin City Boys Movement empowerment programme.

The programme, which held in Benin City, drew widespread attention after reports indicated that beneficiaries successfully received empowerment items without disruption, in sharp contrast to the controversies and alleged incidents of looting and disorder said to have affected a similar outing in Owerri.

Items reportedly distributed during the Benin exercise included mini buses, tricycles, canoes, bicycles, generators, sewing machines and other household and vocational support tools aimed at improving livelihoods and stimulating grassroots economic participation.

At the centre of the operation is political figure and grassroots mobiliser, Paddy Iyamu, whose coordination role in the initiative has become a major talking point among political observers and supporters across the South-South region.

Governor Oborevwori’s remarks acknowledging the smooth execution of the programme have since fueled conversations around the growing influence and organisational capacity of the Benin City Boys Movement, with analysts describing the initiative as a model of structured grassroots political engagement.

Observers say the operation demonstrated a high level of planning, crowd management and beneficiary coordination rarely associated with large-scale political empowerment schemes in recent times.

The development has also intensified debate within political circles over the increasing importance of grassroots structures ahead of future electoral contests, particularly in states where political influence is often shaped by local mobilisation networks.

Supporters of the initiative argue that beyond politics, the programme reflects a deliberate effort to provide practical support to residents through empowerment tools capable of generating income and improving living conditions.
