Lagos State Safety Commission has confirmed the payment of ₦25 million compensation to Mr. Joshua Shapara, a worker who suffered an amputation injury while on duty at Anjia Prefabrication Limited.
The incident, which occurred in 2024 at the company’s block moulding section, was reported to the Ministry of Justice before being referred to the Safety Commission for investigation and regulatory action..
Following the incident, the Commission, through its Risk Management and Regulatory Affairs Department, carried out an immediate assessment of the facility and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Speaking on the development, the Director-General , Safety Commission Mr. Lanre Mojola, represented by the Head of Risk Management and Regulatory Affairs
Engr. Mrs. Adekunbi Obamonire, said although the compensation was commendable, the accident could have been avoided with stricter compliance to workplace safety standards.
According to him, employers must prioritise adequate machine guarding, regular safety audits and strict adherence to operational procedures in order to prevent avoidable industrial accidents.
Mojola stated that the incident exposed critical gaps in operational safety practices and underscored the need for organisations to proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards before they lead to life-altering injuries.
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to enforcing occupational safety standards across workplaces in Lagos State, noting that corrective measures at the facility would continue to be monitored to prevent a recurrence.
The Commission also urged employers across industries to strengthen safety culture within their organisations and ensure workers operate in environments that comply with established health and safety regulations.
