The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olátúnjí Disu, on Saturday underscored the importance of rebuilding public trust and strengthening community partnership as pillars of effective policing, declaring that “citizens are our bosses.”
Disu made the remarks during a working visit to Lagos, which included a stop at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, shortly after inspecting the nearby Rapid Response Squad (RRS) headquarters where he previously served as Commander.
Addressing members of the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents (LAGOCO), the IGP expressed nostalgia at returning to a familiar environment, recalling the cordial and productive relationship he maintained with journalists during his tenure at the RRS.
He noted that the close proximity between the RRS headquarters and the press centre had, at the time, fostered collaboration and mutual understanding between the police and the media, thereby enhancing public communication and service delivery.
The police chief disclosed that his Lagos itinerary included meetings with senior officers, an engagement with the State Governor, and an address to RRS personnel.
He charged officers to uphold professionalism and avoid conduct capable of eroding public confidence, stressing that respect for citizens must remain central to policing duties.
“Modern policing is rooted in partnership with the community. The public must be seen as collaborators in ensuring safety and security,” he said.
Disu added that his visit to the press centre was also to appreciate journalists for their continued support and to sustain the longstanding relationship between the media and the police.
Responding on behalf of LAGOCO, the association’s Chairman, Mr George Okojie, welcomed the IGP and described his appointment as well deserved.
Okojie recalled Disu’s tenure as RRS Commander, highlighting his accessibility, responsiveness to journalists, and concern for their welfare.
He expressed confidence in the IGP’s leadership, noting that his tenure would further strengthen the operational efficiency and public perception of the Nigeria Police Force.
