The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has stepped up consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship race, meeting with key stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consolidate support for his aspiration.

As part of the ongoing engagement, Dr. Hamzat on Saturday visited the immediate past Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, as well as the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Tokunbo Abiru, at their respective residences.

The visits, according to Hamzat, were in keeping with democratic traditions within the APC, aimed at fostering inclusiveness and strengthening internal cohesion.

“Consultations are part of the democratic process to strengthen the party. It is our tradition to carry every member along in decision-making,” he said, underscoring the importance of stakeholder engagement in building consensus.

Responding, Senator Abiru described the move as a reflection of the APC’s core values of unity, discipline, and collective responsibility. He expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity, assuring him of his full support.

“You have our full support,” the lawmaker said, noting that Hamzat possesses the competence and experience required to govern Lagos State effectively.

Similarly, Edun commended the consultation process, describing it as grassroots democracy in action and a vital component of a thriving democratic system. The former finance minister endorsed Hamzat’s aspiration, highlighting his track record in governance.

“You have our endorsement. You have the capacity, experience, and competence to lead,” Edun said, while advising the aspirant to prioritise poverty reduction and sustained economic growth.

Edun also commended the economic reform efforts of President Bola Tinubu, stressing the need for continuity and strategic policy alignment at the state level.

Also present during the visits was former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, who lauded Edun’s longstanding contributions to the APC and his role in shaping economic policy direction.

In the same vein, a political leader at the meeting, Hon. Julius Solomon, described Hamzat as the most qualified aspirant, citing his administrative experience, loyalty to the party, and deep understanding of governance.

The consultation train, observers say, signals an early but strategic move by Hamzat to build broad-based support across party structures as the 2027 electoral cycle gradually comes into focus.
