There was a massive show of political strength in Ikorodu Division on Tuesday as the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, took his consultation tour to key political leaders and stakeholders in the area.
The visit, which drew large crowds and prominent figures, began at the residence of former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye. The gathering featured notable Ikorodu indigenes, including Ashipa Kaoli Olusanya, APC Chairman in Ikorodu, and Hon. Olasunkanmi Tijani, alongside other dignitaries.
Hamzat’s entourage included prominent political figures such as former Ministers and Senators, among them Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, as well as Chief Mutiu Are, Hon. Bode Oyedele, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Adekunle Olayinka.
Welcoming the Deputy Governor, Prince Ogunleye expressed confidence in his leadership, noting that although some expectations of Ikorodu indigenes had not been fully realized, they remained committed to supporting him.
“As believers in God, we accept His will in your emergence. We support you and pray that God will guide you in the discharge of your duties in serving Lagos State,” he said.
At another stop, the residence of the Asiwaju of Igbogbo Kingdom and Governance Advisory Council (GAC) member, Olorunfemi Bashorun, the Deputy Governor received strong endorsement from the community.
Bashorun, speaking on behalf of Igbogbo residents, praised Hamzat’s competence, humility, and dedication to service, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver on governance.
Similarly, former Head of Service in Lagos State, Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe, commended Hamzat’s character and leadership qualities.
At the residence of former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, the reception was equally enthusiastic. The elder statesman declared his support for Hamzat’s candidature and advised him to establish strategic committees that would ensure a successful administration.
Responding, Hamzat assured stakeholders in Ikorodu Division of his commitment to urban renewal, infrastructural development, and provision of essential amenities across the axis.
He, however, urged residents to cooperate with government initiatives, especially in the area of urban renewal.
“The question is: are we ready to support government when it is time for urban renewal? People often resist change, but without some level of sacrifice, it is difficult to achieve the kind of modern city we desire,” he said.
On security, the Deputy Governor reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, noting that many security challenges in Lagos are linked to external factors.
The consultation tour further strengthened Hamzat’s political base in Ikorodu, with leaders across the division pledging their support and confidence in his leadership ahead of the next political dispensation.
