The Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) has elected a new executive council to pilot the affairs of the association for the next three years.
At a keenly contested election held on Thursday at the NACCIMA House, Lagos, Comrade Taiwo Hassan of New Telegraph emerged Chairman after polling 25 votes to defeat Mrs. Rhoda Ogunseye of CrystalNews.com, who garnered eight votes.
Announcing the results, Chairman of the three-man Electoral Committee, Comrade Haruna Jimoh of MITV, declared that Comrade Hassan met all constitutional requirements and was duly elected as CICAN Chairman.
Jimoh described the election as free, fair and credible, commending members for their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the process.
He urged the newly elected leadership to remain committed to their campaign promises and work towards strengthening the association’s visibility and relevance.
Other members of the newly elected executive council include Comrade Stanley Ihedigbo of Mirror Online Newspaper as Vice Chairman; Comrade Olufemi Orioye of OGBC as Secretary General; Mrs. Funmi Adeoye of FRCN as Assistant Secretary; Mrs. Merit Ibe of The Sun as Treasurer; and Mr. Canice Opara of DispatchNewsOnline as Financial Secretary.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Hassan expressed appreciation to members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to lead the association with transparency, accountability and justice.
He said the new executive would prioritise members’ welfare through proactive policies, regular capacity-building programmes and enhanced engagement with key stakeholders.
The CICAN Chairman also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic development, particularly in line with the national aspiration of building a $1 trillion economy.
The Electoral Committee also comprised Comrade Ayanfeoluwa Providence as Secretary and Comrade David Oladimeji of BusinessNews.com as a member.
