Lagos Empowers 5,411 Graduates with Tools to Launch Small Businesses

In a renewed drive to tackle poverty and promote self-reliance, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), on Thursday, presented work tools to 5,411 graduates of its skill acquisition centres across the state.

The 2024 graduates, who underwent training in various vocational skills—including vulcanizing, welding, aluminium fabrication, carpentry, photography, barbing, catering, hairdressing, bead making, gele tying, and makeup artistry—received equipment to kick-start their entrepreneurial journey.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while presenting the tools to the beneficiaries, charged them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of success and not to be discouraged by initial hurdles.

“This graduation is a call to action,” the governor said. “It is a moment to reflect on where you are coming from and the opportunity you now have to transform your life and that of your family. You must have a purpose. You’ve gone through a process; now it's time to succeed. Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Build relationships, stay focused, and persevere through challenges.”

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the graduating class as “symbols of hope, resilience, and determination,” urging them to view their new skills as life-changing assets.

“You must set goals, be proactive, and constantly re-evaluate your plans. This graduation affirms our belief that empowering men and women is essential to securing the future of Lagos. Guard your integrity, sharpen your skills, and be open to new ideas,” she advised.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, said the programme is a deliberate strategy to turn beneficiaries into job creators and employers of labour, thus improving the state's economy and reducing poverty.

“This initiative demonstrates the Sanwo-Olu administration’s unwavering commitment to inclusive development and the empowerment of every segment of our society—especially women, youth, and vulnerable groups,” Dada stated.

She revealed that more than 28,000 individuals have graduated from the state's skill acquisition centres since the inception of the Sanwo-Olu administration.

According to her, one of the ministry’s flagship initiatives, the Life Skills Economic Empowerment Programme (LEEP)—a four-week intensive training designed for women and vulnerable groups—has successfully trained participants in centres located in Agbowa, Ejirin, Ado, Ikosi-Ejirin, Otta-Ikosi, Odo-Ayandelu, Ajeregun, Imofa, and Lagos Island.

Mrs. Dada also expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their consistent support of the ministry’s poverty alleviation efforts.
