Lagos Safety Commission trains construction/built industry workers in safety

The Lagos State Safety  Commission has organised a one-day training for artisans and other workers in the construction/built  industry as part of efforts to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, said this on Monday during the training held in Alausa, Ikeja.

Mojola, who was represented by the Director, Public Safety and Well being, Lagos State Safety  Commission, Mrs Ajoke Oshokoya, noted that the construction is an essence part of the economy in any country and often serve as a driver of economic growth, just he added that the sector is one of the most risk-prone sectors in the world.

He said, “Nigerian workers across all sectors of the economy recently have become more endangered and prone to accidents, which ranges from minor to fatal, as some have lost their lives right in the line of duty, while some have lost vital organs, which had rendered them permanently incapacitated. We have seen lives lost and property destroyed, hence it goes to say that the construction sector is one of the most risk-prone sectors in the world, hence the aim of organizing a training like this nature", Mojola said.

Mojola, however, appealed to the participants to pay quality attention to the facilitators, who according to him"would do justice to the topics chosen for the one-day training.

Different speakers took selected and important safety topics needed at the construction/built industry. 

Speakers include Mr John Edet, Health, Safety and Environment Manager with Cappa and D'Alberto Ltd. 

Others are Mr Adebiyi Adeyinka, Certified Safety Consultant, who spoke on selection, safe use and maintenance of electrical equipment,tools and machinery in the construction and built industry. 

Also, Mr Collins Omamuzo Waya, of BNN  Oil and Gas Limited, Port Harcourt, spoke on hazard awareness and identification and hazard on construction site and the last speaker, Mr Kazeem Olanrewaju, First Aid Trainer Nigeria Red Cross Society, Lagos, who spoke on First Aid Principles, causes of unconsciousness and. CPR, as well as Automated external defibrillator (AED)
