The Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has sponsored a free paediatric surgical outreach programme for indigent children, in a move aimed at improving access to specialised healthcare and relieving vulnerable families of the financial burden of medical treatment.
The initiative, organised in collaboration with the General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, was officially launched on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with free medical screening, consultations and surgical procedures for children requiring specialised care.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Medical Director of General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, Dr Taiwo Oluyemi, commended the Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, Hon. David Olusegun Odunmbaku, for sponsoring the programme, describing the intervention as a practical demonstration of support for children’s health and family welfare.
Oluyemi said the provision of free specialised surgical services would help children from financially disadvantaged households receive necessary treatment that might otherwise remain beyond their families’ reach.
“Leadership is best demonstrated by how well we care for the most vulnerable members of our society. Today, you have once again proven that the well-being of our children is at the heart of your administration,” she said.
The hospital chief also praised the participating surgeons and medical volunteers for dedicating their expertise to the outreach, noting that collaboration between local councils and public health institutions was important in expanding access to essential medical services.
She urged parents and guardians in Ojodu, Ifako-Ijaiye and neighbouring communities to take advantage of the programme while it lasted.
The outreach forms part of the broader healthcare interventions being implemented by the Odunmbaku-led administration to strengthen service delivery and reduce financial barriers to medical care across Ojodu LCDA.
According to the council, its healthcare interventions have facilitated 1,269 minor surgeries, while the See a Doctor programme has supported an additional 145 surgeries.
The administration has also embarked on the renovation and upgrading of primary healthcare facilities, including Ojodu Primary Healthcare Centre, formerly known as Gbadamosi PHC, as well as Akiode PHC and Poverline PHC.
To improve service delivery, the council has expanded its healthcare workforce to more than 175 personnel, alongside other interventions designed to bring medical services closer to residents.
These include free medical outreaches and support for health insurance registration, aimed at making healthcare more affordable and accessible, particularly for low-income households.
The initiatives align with the Lagos State Government’s HEYS Reloaded agenda, which focuses on Health, Education, Youth and Women Empowerment, and Social Infrastructure.
The latest paediatric surgical outreach underscores the council’s focus on addressing the healthcare needs of vulnerable children through targeted interventions and partnerships with public medical institutions.
By removing the immediate cost of eligible surgical procedures for participating families, the programme seeks to improve access to treatment and reinforce efforts to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent children from receiving necessary medical care
