Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, has called on religious and regional leaders to promote unity and national cohesion ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Hamzat made the call at the formal turbaning of elder statesman, Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, OON, as the Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land, held at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.
The colourful ceremony, organised by the Council of Islamic Preachers, also witnessed the installation of Chief (Mrs.) Folashade Tinubu-Ojo as the Iya Adinni of Yoruba Land.
Speaking at the gathering, which attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars and other stakeholders, Hamzat stressed the importance of regional cohesion and religious harmony in sustaining peace and stability in the country.
He also called for support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, arguing that continuity in government would help sustain policies and developmental initiatives already being pursued by the administration.
According to him, the Tinubu administration has established what he described as a foundation for development, making policy continuity important as the country approaches another election cycle.
The Deputy Governor urged religious and community leaders to use their influence to foster peaceful coexistence and strengthen bonds across ethnic, political and religious divides.
The event also provided an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Prince Olusi, whose installation coincided with activities marking his 90th birthday.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr. Seyi Bamigbade, said Olusi was eminently qualified for the traditional Islamic leadership position, citing his decades of service to the community and commitment to peace-building.
Bamigbade noted that the elder statesman had consistently promoted peaceful coexistence across communities, political circles and government institutions.
Also speaking, Dr. Samuel Mayuwon Ajose commended the Council of Islamic Preachers for selecting Olusi, describing the appointment as significant to efforts aimed at strengthening religious harmony and social cohesion across the Yoruba-speaking region.
The ceremony, which celebrated the Islamic heritage of the South-West, attracted dignitaries from government, politics, traditional institutions and the Muslim community.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, served as the Chief Host of the occasion.
