The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative (DGGWI), a coalition of civil society organisations, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for launching its 100-day countdown to the 2027 general elections, urging the electoral body to sustain its commitment to credible polls.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 11, 2026, following an emergency meeting on the state of the nation, the coalition expressed confidence in INEC’s capacity to conduct free, fair, transparent and credible elections.
It urged the commission to remain neutral, professional and focused on its constitutional responsibilities, while calling on Nigerians to support the electoral process.
The coalition also expressed condolences to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Air Force and the families of personnel reportedly killed in an air crash at Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on October 5, 2026.
Describing the incident as painful, DGGWI called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to conduct a thorough and professional investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and prevent future occurrences.
On political campaigns, the group condemned what it described as reckless, provocative and inflammatory statements by some political actors, despite the signing of a peace accord organised by the National Peace Committee.
It urged the committee and security agencies to call erring politicians to order, while asking INEC to enforce relevant laws against electoral misconduct.
DGGWI also appealed to eligible voters yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to take advantage of INEC’s collection arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections.
It advised Nigerians to scrutinise campaign promises carefully and reject inducements that undermine their long-term interests and collective welfare.
The coalition pledged to monitor the electoral process professionally, provide objective assessments and promote public awareness.
The statement was signed by 13 coalition leaders, including Nelson Ekujumi, Gbenga Soloki, Popoola Ajayi and Peter Oparah.
