Professor Oluwatoyin Ayokunle Enikuomehin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Professor of Computer Science at Lagos State University (LASU), is set to examine the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on human intelligence, thought and the future of society at the university’s 127th Inaugural Lecture.
The lecture, scheduled for Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, LASU, Ojo Campus, will focus on the profound changes being driven by intelligent machines and algorithmic systems across virtually every sphere of human endeavour.
Titled “Thinking Machines and the Future of Thinking: Cyberphysicalism, Transformation of Human Thought, and the Emergence of an Artificial Intelligence Driven Algorithmic Society,” the lecture is scheduled to commence at 2:00 p.m.
The event will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.
The lecture is open to members of the public, with guests expected to be seated by 1:30 p.m
Professor Enikuomehin is expected to interrogate how the rapid evolution of AI is reshaping the way people think, learn, communicate, make decisions and interact with institutions.
With algorithms increasingly influencing everyday activities, the professor is expected to examine their implications for individual choices, opportunities and broader social realities, while also exploring the changing relationship between human intelligence and machine intelligence.
A major focus of the lecture will be Cyberphysicalism, an original theoretical framework developed by Professor Enikuomehin to explain the convergence of biological and computational intelligence and its implications for an increasingly algorithm-driven society.
The lecture will also examine the expanding application of AI in critical sectors, including education, healthcare, governance, commerce, cybersecurity, information retrieval and financial services.
According to Professor Enikuomehin, the rapid deployment of AI in these sectors raises fundamental questions about the future of human intelligence, creativity, autonomy and decision-making, particularly as machines become increasingly sophisticated.
A scholar with more than two decades of research and professional experience, Professor Enikuomehin is recognised for his contributions to Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing and digital transformation.
His areas of expertise include machine learning, information retrieval, cybersecurity, biomedical AI and Fuzzy Logic.
His contribution to digital transformation has also been reflected in his leadership of LASU’s Directorate of Information and Communication Technology, during which the university received recognition as Nigeria’s most digitally advanced university in 2022 and 2023.
LASU also received recognition for the best use of technology for student services in 2024 and 2025.
The 127th Inaugural Lecture is particularly significant in the history of LASU as it will be the first inaugural lecture to be delivered from the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, marking a major milestone in the development and academic profile of the faculty.
Inaugural lectures traditionally provide professors with an opportunity to present the body of knowledge accumulated through their academic and professional careers, while contributing original ideas and perspectives to their respective fields.
Against this backdrop, Professor Enikuomehin’s lecture is expected to generate important intellectual discourse on the opportunities and challenges associated with AI, particularly its implications for human cognition, creativity, autonomy and the future organisation of society.
The lecture is expected to attract scholars, researchers, technology experts, policymakers, industry leaders, students and members of the public interested in Artificial Intelligence, digital transformation and the future of human-machine interaction.
