GENERAL HOSPITAL IMOTA, CALEB UNIVERSITY PARTNER TO PROMOTE WATER HYGIENE AMONG STUDENTS

By Kayode Olopade

As part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and improve public health awareness, the Social Welfare Department of General Hospital Imota, in collaboration with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme of the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Caleb University, organised a health sensitisation programme for students of Commonwealth Scientific Secondary School, Imota.

The programme focused on environmental sanitation, proper water hygiene, and the prevention of water-borne diseases, with the aim of equipping students with practical knowledge on healthy living and disease prevention.

Speaking during the event, the Team Leader, Mrs. Evelyn Fatokun, stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment, noting that poor sanitation often leads to the contamination of water sources and the spread of infectious diseases within communities.

She described water as an essential requirement for healthy living, explaining that drinking adequate quantities of clean water supports the body's natural cleansing process and helps prevent urinary tract infections. She, however, cautioned that not all water is safe for consumption, warning that contaminated water can transmit diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, viral infections, and other illnesses caused by harmful microorganisms.

Mrs. Fatokun further educated the students on safe water treatment methods, including chlorination, boiling, and filtration, while also emphasising the importance of storing water in clean, properly covered containers to prevent contamination. She encouraged the students to adopt good personal hygiene practices by washing their hands regularly with soap and clean water or using alcohol-based hand sanitisers, as well as maintaining overall cleanliness at all times.

Also addressing the students, the Head of the Dietetics Department, General Hospital Imota, Miss Faulkner Oluwaseun, enlightened them on the various departments within the hospital and their respective roles in delivering quality healthcare services.

She explained that dietitians are healthcare professionals who utilise food and nutrition to promote health, prevent diseases, and support the treatment of patients with different medical conditions. She also reminded the students that every patient has the right to quality healthcare and encouraged them to provide accurate and complete information about their health conditions to healthcare providers to ensure proper diagnosis and effective treatment.

The sensitisation programme reflects the unwavering commitment of General Hospital Imota to community health promotion through strategic partnerships, health education, and preventive healthcare initiatives aimed at empowering young people with the knowledge required to make informed health decisions and contribute to healthier communities.
