The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSNLagos), has renewed its call for full compliance with the judgment affirming the rights of Muslim female students to wear hijab in public schools across Lagos State, seven years after the landmark ruling.
The organisation made the demand at a press briefing in Alausa on Monday led by Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Ajibola Yusuf Salami, as Amir (President), on Monday, June 22, 2026.
Addressing journalists at the event, MSSNLagos said while significant progress had been recorded since the judgment, reports of alleged harassment, intimidation and restrictions against some Muslim female students over hijab observance remained a concern.
The group urged the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Teaching Service Commission and school administrators to ensure uniform implementation of the judgment, stressing that students should be allowed to observe their faith within the framework of constitutional rights.
According to MSSNLagos, the hijab represents an act of religious observance and should not be subjected to unofficial restrictions that undermine the spirit of the court pronouncement.
“Seven years after the court’s pronouncement, the focus should no longer be on debating or restricting the use of the hijab, but on ensuring that every student can learn in an atmosphere of dignity, inclusion and respect for constitutionally guaranteed rights,” the society stated.
The organisation, however, reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement and dialogue with relevant stakeholders, noting that religious freedom, unity and educational excellence can coexist in a diverse society such as Nigeria.
The hijab issue formed part of a broader agenda unveiled by the newly inaugurated MSSNLagos administration, which pledged to prioritise student welfare, youth development, moral orientation and educational advancement.
Dr. Salami, who described the transition as “a new dawn” for the organisation, said the new leadership would consolidate on past achievements while introducing programmes aimed at strengthening mentorship, leadership development and community service.
He said the emergence of the new administration coincided with the beginning of the Islamic year 1448AH, which he described as a period of renewal, reflection and renewed commitment to service.
“The Hijrah teaches resilience, sacrifice, strategic leadership and the courage to transform challenges into opportunities. This administration sees this transition as more than a change of leadership; it represents a renewed commitment to serving Muslim students and youths across Lagos State,” he said.
The new executive council includes Bro. Ridwan Aderolu as Naibul Amir (Vice President), Bro. Hamzah Alagbe as Naibul Amir, Higher Institution Affairs, Bro. Abdulkabeer Taiwo Kuye as Naibul Amir, Graduate Members Affairs, and Bro. Muhammad Mustapha as General Secretary.
The Sisters’ Circle will be led by Hajia Rofiat Tijani as Amirah.
Beyond the hijab advocacy, MSSNLagos also raised concerns over challenges affecting Nigerian students, including rising education costs, unemployment, insecurity and limited access to opportunities.
The organisation commended initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), but called for increased investment in scholarships, educational infrastructure, research, teacher development and student support programmes.
On insecurity, MSSNLagos condemned kidnapping, banditry and terrorism, describing such acts as threats to national development and the safety of students and communities.
It called for stronger security measures, improved protection for schools, technology-driven surveillance systems and faster prosecution of criminal elements.
The society also unveiled plans to expand youth empowerment initiatives through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship training, mentorship and leadership development.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, MSSNLagos urged political leaders to promote issue-based campaigns and encouraged young people to participate actively in democratic processes.
Dr. Salami assured that the new administration would remain committed to protecting students’ rights, promoting academic excellence and contributing positively to national development.
