...Says No Child Must Be Left Behind in Development Agenda
By Kayode Olopade
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to building an inclusive society where every child, regardless of background, ability, gender or socio-economic status, is given equal opportunities to learn, grow and realise their full potential.
The assurance was given at the 2026 Children's Day celebration held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, where government officials, parents, teachers, caregivers, development partners and hundreds of children gathered to commemorate the annual event and advocate for children's rights, welfare and development.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, described children as the future leaders, innovators and nation-builders whose dreams, talents and aspirations represent the foundation of a prosperous Nigeria.
Addressing participants on the theme, "Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child," Ogunlende said the theme underscores the urgent need for governments, institutions and communities to create a society where every child feels valued, protected and empowered to succeed.
According to him, the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains deliberate in implementing policies and programmes that promote child welfare, protection, education and social inclusion, particularly for children living with disabilities and those in vulnerable circumstances.
He noted that the state's child-centred interventions are aimed at eliminating barriers that prevent children from accessing opportunities needed to develop their abilities and contribute meaningfully to society.
"The future we desire for Nigeria is already reflected in the hopes, dreams and talents of our children. Every child matters, regardless of background, ability or circumstance. We are committed to building a society where every child is seen, heard, protected and supported to thrive," Ogunlende stated.
The Commissioner added that Lagos State has continued to strengthen child protection systems, expand access to quality education and deepen social inclusion initiatives as part of efforts to ensure that no child is left behind in the state's development agenda.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, described children as the bedrock of the state's future and a critical component of sustainable development.
She said the Children's Day celebration serves as a reminder of society's collective responsibility to nurture, protect and empower children, stressing that every child deserves dignity, care, protection and access to opportunities that enable them to excel.
According to her, the Sanwo-Olu administration has consistently placed children at the centre of its developmental agenda through strategic investments in education, social protection, healthcare and child-focused interventions designed to improve their quality of life.
"Every child deserves care, dignity and opportunities to succeed. We remain committed to strengthening child protection mechanisms, expanding access to quality education, supporting children with special needs and promoting inclusive policies that guarantee equal opportunities for all," she said.
The Permanent Secretary encouraged children to believe in themselves, embrace learning and remain confident in their unique abilities, noting that their talents and creativity have the potential to shape a brighter future for Lagos State and Nigeria.
Both officials emphasized that safeguarding children's rights and welfare requires a collective effort involving government, families, schools, communities, civil society organisations and development partners.
They urged children to cultivate values of discipline, resilience, tolerance and kindness while embracing diversity and supporting one another irrespective of differences in background or ability.
The event featured cultural displays, educational activities and interactive sessions designed to celebrate children's achievements and reinforce the importance of inclusion in national development.
As the celebration concluded, the Lagos State Government renewed its pledge to continue investing in policies and programmes that protect children, promote their well-being and create an enabling environment where every child can flourish and contribute meaningfully to society.
