The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to transform public school infrastructure across the state, rehabilitating 433 schools and delivering 1,290 new classrooms since the reactivation of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in 2019.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, disclosed this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, where he outlined the administration’s ongoing investments in improving learning conditions and expanding access to quality education.
According to him, the intervention reflects the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to addressing infrastructural deficits in public schools across the six education districts of the state.
Alli-Balogun explained that SCRPS, originally established in 2004 during the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Governor of Lagos State, was re-inaugurated by Governor Sanwo-Olu in November 2019 to tackle widespread infrastructural decay in public schools.
He revealed that within the 2025 fiscal year alone, the committee rehabilitated 47 classroom blocks in both primary and secondary schools, while several major classroom construction projects were completed across different parts of the state.
Among schools that benefited from rehabilitation works are Olorunfunmi Junior Grammar School, Akinyele Alakuko Junior Grammar School, Gbagada Girls Junior Grammar School, Lagos State Model School, Agbowa Community Secondary School, Randle Senior Secondary School and Community Senior Secondary School.
The commissioner stated that all new school projects are subjected to geotechnical soil investigations before construction to guarantee structural integrity, while designs are tailored to ensure proper ventilation, natural lighting, potable water supply and modern sanitation facilities.
He added that the state government has also expanded its technology-driven modular classroom initiative first introduced at Vetland Junior Grammar School. The initiative has now been replicated at Girls Senior Secondary School, Lagos Baptist Secondary School and Ogba Junior Secondary School.
According to the committee, the modular classroom system uses container-based structures that reduce construction time and cost while integrating digital learning facilities such as interactive screens, tablets and other technology-enabled teaching tools.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has equally approved the construction of an additional 18-classroom modular block at Wesley Girls’ Senior Secondary School, which is expected to be completed in 2026.
To address furniture shortages in public schools, SCRPS disclosed that it has supplied 223,343 units of ergonomic furniture, including desks, chairs and furniture for principals and teachers across schools statewide.
The committee also announced the completion of the extensive redevelopment of the Tolu School Complex, described as one of the largest integrated public school projects in Nigeria.
The upgraded complex, which accommodates 36 schools and about 20,000 students, now features 13 newly constructed classroom blocks, 24 rehabilitated buildings, internal road networks, sports facilities, a vocational training centre, ICT hub, science laboratory, fire station and health centre.
SCRPS further stated that the project incorporates facilities for Persons Living With Disabilities and environmentally sustainable infrastructure such as solar panels, biodigesters and water harvesting systems.
In addition, several 18-classroom blocks were completed between late 2025 and early 2026 at schools including State Comprehensive Junior High School, Lajo Junior Secondary School, Reri Senior Secondary School, Odo Obara Secondary School, Festac Junior Grammar School and Eko Boys High School.
The committee said ongoing classroom construction projects are currently spread across Agege, Ikorodu, Epe, Ojo, Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki, Surulere, Badagry and other parts of the state.
For the 2026/2027 phase, Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved seven additional 18-classroom block projects expected to deliver 126 new classrooms.
According to SCRPS, the new projects will raise the total number of classrooms constructed since its re-inauguration to 1,416, further strengthening the state government’s drive to provide a conducive and technology-driven learning environment for pupils and students in Lagos public schools.
