The Lagos State Government has intensified the deployment of technology-driven traffic enforcement measures as part of efforts to strengthen road safety, improve regulatory compliance and modernise transportation management across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa to commemorate the second-term seventh anniversary of the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Osiyemi revealed that the state recorded 737,340 traffic violations through the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system within the review period, reflecting the government’s increasing reliance on intelligent traffic monitoring and digital surveillance technology to improve compliance and reduce infractions on Lagos roads.
He explained that the adoption of smart transportation systems had become central to the administration’s long-term strategy of building a safer, more efficient and globally competitive transport network capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly growing megacity.
The commissioner further disclosed that the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service had intensified enforcement of the “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy through technology-enabled operations targeted at removing unroadworthy vehicles from roads across the state.
According to him, a total of 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued during the period under review, indicating growing compliance among motorists and vehicle owners with vehicle safety regulations.
Osiyemi also announced plans by the state government to introduce a Lagos State driver’s licence as part of broader reforms aimed at improving traffic administration, reducing delays in documentation processes and enhancing road safety.
He said the proposed Lagos-issued driver’s licence would operate alongside the existing federal driver’s licence system under a collaborative arrangement with relevant federal authorities.
The commissioner noted that motorists would have the option of obtaining either the federal licence or the Lagos State driver’s licence, adding that the initiative was designed to simplify access to licensing services while strengthening transportation regulation within the state.
He stressed that the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu remained committed to consolidating ongoing transportation reforms and introducing innovative measures capable of addressing the increasing mobility and traffic challenges confronting Lagos.
