President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the remodelled Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, Lagos State, described as one of the largest concentrations of schools in sub-Saharan Africa.
Represented by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the President also commissioned additional landmark projects across the state on Thursday, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen education, youth development and food security.
Situated on nearly twelve hectares of land in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, the Tolu Schools Complex comprises 31 secondary schools and five primary schools. The expansive facility also includes vocational training centres, modern science laboratories, and ICT and robotics hubs designed to equip students with 21st-century skills.
In addition, the complex features inclusive learning centres, a fully equipped primary health centre, and a fire service station, collectively designed to serve more than 20,000 students in a safe and conducive learning environment.
Speaking at the inauguration, Akpabio described Lagos State as a model for other states, noting that the scale and quality of the redevelopment reflect a strong commitment to human capital development and sustainable national growth.
In his goodwill message, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the regeneration of the complex aligns with the Federal Government’s policies aimed at expanding access to quality education. He added that over one million out-of-school children have returned to classrooms within the past 30 months, highlighting significant progress in the education sector.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his address, recalled that the Tolu Schools Complex was originally established in 1981 during the administration of former Lagos State Governor, Lateef Jakande. He noted that the facilities had deteriorated over time, necessitating a comprehensive redevelopment.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the project was conceived to provide a modern, safe and inclusive learning environment that meets global standards, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in education infrastructure.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Lagos State Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, Hakeem Smith, stated that the project was successfully delivered despite significant challenges, driven by the vision of providing world-class teaching and learning facilities for Lagos residents.
Beyond the school complex, the President inaugurated the Maracana Sports Complex in Ajegunle, which features 19 mini football pitches aimed at promoting grassroots sports development. He also commissioned a mid-level agro-food hub in Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki, designed to enhance food processing, storage and distribution within the state.
The event attracted a host of dignitaries, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, ministers, deputy governors, traditional rulers and community leaders, reflecting the national significance of the projects.
