The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s plan to deploy the National Single Window for Trade Initiative, a strategic digital platform designed to streamline import and export processes and enhance the efficiency of Nigeria’s trade ecosystem.
The National Single Window initiative, which is expected to commence operations on March 27, 2026, will integrate multiple government agencies involved in trade regulation into a unified electronic platform. The system will enable traders to submit documentation through a single online portal, where relevant authorities can process permits and approvals.
Industry stakeholders say the platform is expected to reduce duplication of regulatory procedures, improve transparency and significantly enhance efficiency in the country’s trade environment.
As Nigeria’s apex standards body responsible for developing and enforcing product and service standards, SON plays a critical role in ensuring product quality, consumer safety and fair trade practices.
The agency said it is working closely with other regulatory bodies to ensure that the integration of their operations into the National Single Window framework strengthens quality assurance systems and compliance with applicable standards.
According to the organisation, the introduction of the digital trade platform represents a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s trade infrastructure and improving the ease of doing business in the country.
By enabling the electronic submission and processing of permits, certificates and other regulatory documentation, the initiative is expected to simplify trade procedures and accelerate cargo clearance processes at the nation’s ports.
Trade experts believe that the system could significantly reduce cargo clearance timelines while boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.
To ensure seamless participation in the new framework, SON said it has already begun aligning its digital platforms and regulatory procedures with the emerging trade facilitation architecture.
The organisation noted that these measures would support faster processing of standards-related approvals and improve coordination with other government agencies operating within the National Single Window system.
SON added that the initiative would further strengthen its statutory mandate of ensuring that products imported into and exported from Nigeria comply with established national and international standards.
The agency also assured stakeholders, including manufacturers, importers, exporters and logistics operators of its continued collaboration to promote compliance while facilitating legitimate trade activities across the country.
The Director-General/Chief Executive of SON, Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, said the organisation remains committed to supporting policies and initiatives that improve Nigeria’s trade competitiveness and strengthen consumer protection through effective standards enforcement.
