Global Tensions: League of Imams Cautions Against Unrest in Nigeria

The League of Imams and Alfas in Lagos State has called on Nigerians to refrain from protests and actions capable of disrupting the nation’s fragile peace, amid heightened tensions following recent United States and Israeli military actions in Iran.

The appeal was made on Tuesday night during the 2026 Ramadan Tafsir programme held at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

Speaking on behalf of the League, the Chief Missioner of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Ahmad, urged Muslims and Christians alike to use the holy seasons of Ramadan and Lent to pray for Nigeria rather than engage in demonstrations.

His remarks come against the backdrop of protests reportedly staged in parts of the country over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during recent strikes involving the United States and Israel.

Ahmad stressed that Nigeria must not allow external conflicts to inflame domestic tensions.

“This is a time for prayer, a time to be agents of peace. It is not a time for protest and demonstration. It is not a time for insults or upheavals. It is a time for sober reflection,” he said.

He warned that global instability could have economic repercussions for Nigeria, particularly in the petroleum sector, urging citizens to brace for possible fuel price increases.

“Prepare for possible increases in fuel prices. If you have refilled your vehicle’s tank recently, you will understand what I mean. The price could climb further, possibly even reaching ₦2,000 per litre. These are uncertain times. Some are even speculating about a third world war. Whatever the case, we must respond with prayer and wisdom,” he added.

The cleric acknowledged that while Nigerians may feel emotionally connected to developments in the Middle East, resorting to protests could open the door to violence and destruction.

“We are not happy that fellow human beings are being attacked daily. But if we cannot be part of the solution, we must not become part of the problem. Do not join protests you do not fully understand,” he cautioned.

Ahmad referenced the lingering effects of the 2020 #EndSARS protests, noting that demonstrations, regardless of their original intent, could be hijacked by hoodlums and lead to unintended consequences.

“Your intention may be pure, but you do not know who may exploit that situation to cause mayhem and destruction. Nigeria is still dealing with the aftermath of previous unrest. We must learn from history,” he said.

The League further urged religious leaders across denominations to use their pulpits and platforms to promote unity, discourage disaffection, and reinforce the message of peaceful coexistence.

According to Ahmad, Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths, and preserving national stability must take precedence over imported geopolitical grievances.

He concluded by appealing to citizens to channel their concerns into constructive dialogue and fervent prayers for both Lagos State and Nigeria at large, emphasizing that peace remains the bedrock of development.
