Countdown Begins for Lagos Fanti Carnival at Tafawa Balewa Square

With 40 days to go, organisers have announced final preparations for what is being described as Africa’s largest Afro-Brazilian street experience, the Lagos Fanti Carnival, set to hold on Monday, April 6, 2026.

The highly anticipated cultural celebration will take place at Tafawa Balewa Square, drawing thousands of participants and spectators from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

Promoters say the event will showcase vibrant Afro-Brazilian heritage through colourful processions, elaborate costumes, music, dance and theatrical street performances.

The carnival, popularly known as “Fanti,” traces its roots to the historic returnee communities in Lagos who blended Brazilian and West African cultural traditions.

Organisers are encouraging members of the public to register early, noting that attendance is free but limited tickets are available. Registration details are available online.

The Lagos Fanti Carnival has grown in recent years into a major cultural attraction, celebrating the city’s diverse history while boosting tourism and creative enterprise. This year’s edition is expected to feature an expanded street procession and curated performances designed to highlight the deep cultural ties between Brazil and Nigeria.

As the countdown continues, anticipation is building for what promises to be one of the most colourful cultural spectacles on the continent.
