Nigeria at 65: Hamzat Rallies Support for Tinubu's Economic Reforms, Urges Unity and Patriotism

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has called on citizens to remain united and patient with the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as tough but necessary steps toward stabilizing and repositioning the economy.

Dr. Hamzat spoke on Friday during a Special Jumaat Service organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Lagos Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja. He acknowledged the temporary hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and other fiscal adjustments but insisted that the long-term benefits would outweigh current challenges.

“Great nations are built on sacrifices. What the Federal Government is doing is not just for today but for the future of our children and generations yet unborn. We must remain united and supportive to ensure the reforms yield positive results,” Hamzat said.

The Deputy Governor highlighted reforms in taxation, agriculture, and foreign exchange as critical to laying a strong foundation for sustainable and inclusive development. He assured that Lagos State would continue to align its development agenda with federal initiatives, particularly in infrastructure renewal, youth empowerment, and social welfare.

On subsidy removal, Hamzat explained that the decision was aimed at redirecting resources to national development rather than enriching a few individuals. He urged citizens to remain hopeful, stressing that government was, committed to improving living standards.

He also charged parents to play a more active role in shaping the moral character of their children, warning that unguarded exposure to digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, could erode family and societal values.

“While AI offers immense opportunities, it could also be misused if not properly managed. If we fail to supervise our children, technology will guide them in the wrong direction. As Muslims, it is our duty to nurture them with sound morals and discipline,” he cautioned.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. Ibraheem Layode, underscored the importance of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy. He said Lagos remains a model of tolerance and inclusivity, urging the rest of the country to emulate its spirit of mutual respect.

Delivering the khutbah, Sheikh Shakiru Gafar admonished Nigerians to embrace patience, sacrifice, and unity, reminding them that no nation develops without enduring challenges. He called on leaders to be God-fearing and people-oriented, while urging citizens to remain law-abiding and prayerful.

Special prayers were later offered for peace, stability, and progress in Lagos and Nigeria at large.
