Sanwo-Olu unveils Tech-Driven Fire Safety Strategy to protect Lagos residents

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to deploying cutting-edge technology and sustained public engagement in its mission to safeguard lives and property from the devastating effects of fire outbreaks.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance yesterday while declaring open the second edition of the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference, themed “Leveraging Technology and Community Engagement to Prevent Fires”, organised by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service at Victoria Island.

Sanwo-Olu, who was the Chief Host, with his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, in attendance, disclosed that the state is now integrating cameras, drones, and real-time data systems into its fire response operations. He stressed that these innovations will significantly boost emergency response times and improve outcomes.

“We are not only investing in modern tools and infrastructure but also in training, community sensitisation, and partnerships with the private sector,” the Governor said. “By teaching students safety standards and rescue skills, we are preparing the next generation to identify risks, prevent outbreaks, and protect their communities.”

Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, noted that the three-day conference aims to chart strategic response frameworks aligned with the state government’s goal of minimising fire disasters.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, revealed that in the past year, the agency recorded 1,952 fire-related emergencies, saving property valued at over ₦117.12 billion. She urged residents to take personal responsibility for prevention, noting that collaboration with the public is essential.

In goodwill messages, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, and other stakeholders commended the government’s proactive adoption of technology in line with the THEMES Plus agenda, as well as the Fire Service’s effective collaboration with other agencies to ensure a safer Lagos.
