Pensioners’ Union Suspends Lagos Polls Over Missing Audited Reports

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has halted the conduct of elections into the Lagos State Council and instead constituted an eight-member caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the body.

Announcing the decision, the representative of the National Chairman of the union, Ishmael Onuh, explained that there was no basis to proceed with the elections since the dissolved executives failed to present audited reports of the union for the past two years. 

He noted that internal misunderstandings among the outgoing executives stalled accountability and disrupted the proper documentation and handover process.

Onuh described the situation as “appalling,” stressing that it was unacceptable for the Lagos Council to be run for two years without accountability. 

The newly formed caretaker committee, headed by Mr. Caleb Olanrewaju as Chairman, with Mr. Kayode Bada as Secretary and Mrs. Folashade Bakare as Treasurer, was tasked with harmonizing the financial records of the union and investigating why the former Secretary declined to sign the audited report. 

The committee was given six months to complete its assignment.

Reacting to the development, a union member, Mr. Akindayo Akinronbi, welcomed the postponement of the elections and praised the formation of the caretaker committee. 

He emphasized that stewardship and accountability must be established before a new executive council is elected. Another member, Mr. Sulaiman Adetokunbo, also described the move as a “crucial lesson,” stressing the need to correct past lapses before moving forward.
