The Lagos State Health District IV Health Education and promotion, has organised a- two-day seminar on Infodemics to enlighten and sensitise Lagosians on misinformation and spreading of fake news, particularly when there is crisis in the health sector.
During outbreak or immunization period the over production of data from multiple sources, the quality of the information and spread at which New information is disseminated create social and health related impacts, this phenomenon called an Infodemics, involves a torrent of online information containing either false and misleading information or accurate content.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District IV, n Dr Abimbola Bowale, said available evidence suggests that Infodemics during health emergencies have an adverse effects on society. Multi sectoral actions to counteract Infodemics and health misinformation needed, including developing legal policies, creating and promoting awareness campaigns, improving health related content in mass media and increasing people's digital health literacy.
He opined that too much information including false or misleading information in digital and physical environment during crises or immunization particularly for children and acknowledges that this deluge of information can lead to mistrust of government and public response.
The permanent secretary Dr Abimbola Bowale, urge Lagosians to help slow the spread of health misinformation during disease outbreaks and children vaccination. Health misinformation is a serious threat to public health. It can cause confusion, sow mistrust, harm people's health effori. Limiting the spread of health misinformation is a moral and civic imperative that will require a whole of Lagosians efforts.
