The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Procurement has commended the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency (LSPPA) for its role in strengthening public procurement in the State, while calling for improved processes and a better working environment for the Agency.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairman, House Committee on Procurement, Hon. Samuel Apata, said the purpose was to assess LSPPA’s performance, understand its operations and challenges, and inspect its working environment. He noted that procurement had become firmly established across most MDAs, stressing that government projects must pass through the procurement process before execution.
Also speaking, the Chairman, House Committee on Special Duties, Hon. Rauf Sulaiman Age, commended LSPPA’s revenue generation efforts and pledged the Committee’s support for providing the Agency with a more spacious and befitting office accommodation.
The Chairman, House Committee on Establishment, Pension and Training, Hon. Ola Dele Ajayi, called for greater compliance with the procurement law and urged procurement officers to reduce bureaucracy and strengthen the monitoring of contractors.
Similarly, the Chairman, House Committee on Home Affairs, Hon. Jubril Kareem, urged procurement officers to be proactive, improve public awareness of the Agency’s functions, and minimise delays that could affect government projects.
Responding, the Director-General of LSPPA, Mr. Fatai Idowu Onafowote, appreciated the Committee for the visit and its concerns. He emphasised the importance of procurement in ensuring the proper utilisation of public funds and assured the members of the Agency’s commitment to improving compliance, simplifying processes and eliminating unnecessary delays.
Onafowote explained that the recent Business Process Review, facilitated by the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation (OTCI), addressed areas of duplication involving Auditors, Accountants, Planners and other officers.
He also clarified that MDAs are responsible for contractor mobilisation, while assuring that LSPPA would engage procurement officers across MDAs to strengthen monitoring and ensure that contractors commence and complete projects as required.
He reiterated the Agency’s commitment to continuous improvement, effective monitoring, compliance with the law and a more efficient procurement system that supports the development of Lagos State.
