Why Hamzat Chose Obanikoro for the 2027 Campaign

By Kayode Olopade

The decision by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, to appoint Senator Musiliu Obanikoro as Director-General of his 2027 governorship campaign has generated significant political interest within and beyond Lagos. While political appointments are often viewed through the prism of loyalty and alliances, this particular choice appears to reflect a broader calculation rooted in competence, experience, and demonstrated capacity for political management.

In contemporary politics, successful campaigns require more than popularity and financial resources. They demand strategic coordination, stakeholder management, conflict resolution, grassroots mobilization, and the ability to inspire confidence among party members and the electorate. It is against this backdrop that Hamzat's decision becomes easier to understand.

For many political observers, Obanikoro's appointment is a recognition of a recent performance that earned him considerable respect across party lines. His role as Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee in Kwara State is widely regarded as one of the most successful examples of internal party democracy during the current electoral cycle.

The Kwara governorship primary was anything but straightforward. It involved multiple aspirants, competing interests, and heightened political expectations. In a political environment where primary elections frequently degenerate into disputes, accusations, and prolonged litigation, there were understandable concerns that the exercise could face similar challenges.

Instead, the process unfolded differently.

Under Obanikoro's leadership, the committee adopted an approach anchored on consultation, engagement, dialogue, and consensus-building. Rather than allowing disagreements to escalate into factional crises, the committee succeeded in managing competing interests while preserving the integrity of the exercise.

The result was a process that commanded widespread acceptance because stakeholders trusted its fairness.

At a time when many party primaries have been overshadowed by allegations of manipulation and favoritism, Obanikoro distinguished himself by maintaining neutrality and discipline throughout the exercise. His conduct reinforced the principle that credible leadership remains essential to sustaining democratic institutions.

These qualities are precisely what political campaigns require.

The role of a campaign Director-General extends far beyond coordinating rallies and political events. The office serves as the operational nerve centre of any serious electoral project. It demands the ability to harmonize diverse interests, maintain party cohesion, oversee strategy implementation, coordinate grassroots structures, manage communications, and navigate inevitable political disagreements.

Few individuals are entrusted with responsibilities of such magnitude without a proven record of leadership and organizational competence.

Obanikoro's political résumé speaks for itself. A former senator, minister, and Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, he possesses decades of experience in governance, diplomacy, public administration, and political organization. These experiences have equipped him with the strategic insight and institutional knowledge required to manage a complex statewide campaign.

Yet beyond his impressive credentials, it is arguably his recent performance in Kwara that strengthened his case for the position.

Politics often rewards current relevance as much as historical accomplishments. The Kwara primary served as a practical demonstration of Obanikoro's ability to manage a politically sensitive assignment successfully. It showcased his capacity to balance firmness with inclusiveness, authority with consultation, and political effectiveness with fairness.

Those are qualities that cannot be overlooked in a state as politically significant and diverse as Lagos.

For Hamzat, whose governorship ambition will depend on building broad coalitions across various political, ethnic, professional, and socioeconomic constituencies, the appointment sends a clear message. It suggests a campaign that intends to place a premium on professionalism, organization, and strategic leadership rather than mere political symbolism.

The decision also underscores a fundamental truth about electoral politics: victories are often determined long before election day. Effective campaigns are built on planning, structure, discipline, and public confidence. The individuals entrusted with directing such campaigns frequently shape not only the campaign's operational success but also public perceptions of its seriousness and credibility.

Seen from this perspective, the appointment of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro appears to be more than a routine political announcement. It is an acknowledgment that competence remains one of the most valuable assets in politics.

As the race toward 2027 gradually gathers momentum, Lagos will undoubtedly witness intense political competition and vigorous debate. However, regardless of partisan preferences, there is broad agreement that effective leadership remains indispensable to democratic success.

By selecting Obanikoro as Director-General, Hamzat appears to have chosen a political strategist whose recent record demonstrates fairness, administrative discipline, coalition-building skills, and strategic thinking. If the Kwara experience is any guide, the appointment may prove to be one of the earliest and most consequential decisions of the 2027 governorship contest.

In an era when public trust is increasingly difficult to earn and even harder to sustain, the value of proven leadership cannot be overstated. That, perhaps, is the strongest explanation for why Hamzat chose Obanikoro.
